Incorporated in 1963 in the State of Maryland, Pettit & Griffin, Inc
started their first single family project consisting of 19 homes on April 1, 1963 with six employees, including its founders, John H. Pettit and Howard D. Griffin, Jr.. Mr. Pettit and Mr. Griffin concentrated on development in Prince George's County and as a team developed and sold more than 850 units in their first ten years of operation.
Over the next 20 years the company grew into one of the premier mid-sized development companies in the Washington Metropolitan area. Annual sales in excess of 25 million were recorded in 1988 and 1989, when the company employed 120 persons. Operations were scaled back in the early 1990's due to economic conditions. The firm is now sized to compete effectively in the regional market place.
Pettit & Griffin, Inc is the developer of Flower Hill Subdivision,
a mixed use, residential and commercial project in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Flower Hill has over 2025 residential units, 76,000 square feet of commercial office space and over 100,000 square feet of commercial retail space. Another successful Montgomery County development by Pettit & Griffin is
Plantations & Plantations II Subdivisions in Damascus, Maryland.
These two projects were completed in 1989 and have over 700 residential units.
Property Management and Leasing
In addition to Residential Single Family, townhouse and apartment developments, the company and its subsidiary companies have constructed and operate three office building developments, a shopping center and an industrial warehouse complex. All are managed by a wholly owned company, Pettit Management Services.
Pettit Homes, LLC (Virginia Home Building Division):
The Fredericksburg, Virginia area is one of the fastest growing areas in the state of Virginia. Since 1996 Pettit Homes, LLC has constructed and sold new homes in the Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County and Orange County areas. Our models can be seen in such communities as Fawn Lake, Sheraton Hills South, Crown Grant, Catharpin Tree and Stacy Crossing (aka Chancellor Crossing).The company is proud of the communities they have developed and takes pride in its history of constructing quality homes at an affordable price.
The company is active in the political arena surrounding the building industry in the Washington Metropolitan area. The company is also active in civic and charitable orpganizations. Both John and Richard are past presidents of the Suburban Maryland Building Industry Association (SMBIA) and Richard B. Pettit currently serves on the Executive Committee and as a Life Director. Richard also serves on the Executive Committee for the Maryland State Builders Association and has served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Home Builders for many years. Richard is also active in the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce.
Family Ties
In 1972 the company repurchased Mr. Griffin's stock as he retired due to illness. Mr. Griffin passed away in May of 1976 and we keep his memory with us and in our corporate name.
In January 1994, John H. Pettit passed away unexpectedly and is greatly missed by all who knew him. Richard B. Pettit, John's eldest son, currently serves as President and CEO for Pettit & Griffin, Inc
John Pettit's three other children joined the firm after graduating from various colleges with degrees in such areas as business and finance. All are active in the business today.
